Tutorial on how to rip DVDs

Addicted to movies? have a lot of old DVD's that you'd like to make a back up of and watch it from your hard drive? Well, today I will be talking about how to rip any DVD (encrypted or otherwise) using some good old open source tools.

Now before I start I'd like to first ask all of you to read my disclaimer and also tell you that ripping dvds that do not belong to you is illegal so watch out for the feds if you are doing anything illegal. and yeah try not to do it!

Well first of all. if the dvd in question is encrypted then you need to get your hands on a good dvd decrypting tool. One of my favourite is DVD43. Just download the installer, run it and it will decrypt the dvd you have inserted in your disk ROM on the fly, in the backgorund without any hassle.

Unfortunately DVD43 only supports 32 bit systems so if you have a 64 bit system I suggest using DVD Decrypter

Next up get your hands on a really nifty media encoding tool called Handbrake.

When you launch the HandBrake program, click the Source button and select the DVD from the drop-down menu. HandBrake will then scan the disc for titles to copy. This step can take some time, depending on how much data is on your disc.

When the scan is completed, click on the title drop down menu and select the title that you want ripped. now generally speaking, you'd want to choose the title that has the largest run time (in terms of hours and minutes that are given in paranthesis next to the title) selecting any other titles make result you getting only the preview, trailers, FBI warnings or any other jazz except what you really wanted, i.e. the movie.

Next up, check out the preset menu on the right hand side, a plethora of formats are available for various devices like iPod, Apple TV, etc. so just choose the one you require and jump to the next step, which is ....

The video tab, which allows you to fine tune your final project and make some quality changes. Similary, the audio tab allows you to choose different bit rate and dolby processing

If you are ripping more than one title, click Add to Queue; otherwise, click Start, and presto the magic has begun!

Now get rippin'!

Gaming News - Anarcrypt

Well today I was genuinely stumped as to what to write on Anarcrypt. I do have a few ideas for articles in mind such as, "how to root android devices", "how to jailbreak iphone running any iOS", "how to hack your Xbox360 to run back-up of games" but to be fair these articles will take time.

But then I realized no self respecting Tech blog that boasts articles on every topic related to Tech, would leave out gaming from the equation.

Hence I have decided to give you gamers some juicy news now and then! for one thing it is something even I'm interested in writing but never got the change to go on that tangent on Anarcrypt. Well the time has come!

Stay tuned to Anarcrypt to get some hot gaming news now and then !

Cheers for reading!

Why did Facebook buy Instagram | What's so special about Instagram

So unless you are living under a rock, you know by now that Facebook has acquired Instagram for a cool 1 Billion Dollars. That's 1 followed by nine friggin' zeroes, if you didn't know !

For those of you who don't know, Instagram is a social networking success story which is, surprisingly, solely based on the mobile platform. It was an app, first developed and launched for the iPhone through which users could click snaps, add cool filters and share those pictures on Twitter, Facebook, G+ etc. Only recently has Instagram been made available for the android devices and ..... yeah that pretty much sums up what Instagram is all about. Its a social networking app that revolves around pictures. Period.

Another interesting fact about Instagram is that it has absolutely zero revenues so far. It does not have advertisements, it does not charge for it's app and the only money it has made so far is when Facebook dished out 1 billion dollars to acquire it. gotta say! not bad for its first (and last) checque as an independent enterprise!

Some bloggers are of the opinion that Facebook is scared shitless by what Instagram stands for: i.e. A social network with a soul; a community filled with passionate users. Something that Facebook "lacks". Sure we all use Facebook, bloggers say, but we use them out of necessity these days and not because we love using it! Yet others believe that since Facebook really thrives on photo sharing (having 40 million photos uploaded to it by users every single day!) and since Instagram is all about photo sharing, it makes good business sense to buy out this fledgling company. The fact that Instagram has recently released an app for android could have worked as an added incentive in the buy-out deceision as well since the new app will ensure a huge influx of new users!

I tend to agree with the latter. It makes completely good sense to buy Instagram if  (a) you have the money! and (b) if your companies strategy also depends on your users sharing photos (along with every other aspect of their lives) ! Moreover, Instagram excelled in something even Facebook couldn't: Viral growth on the mobile platform!

What do you guys think? Will some good come out of Facebook buying out Instagram? or will it all be for naught ?!

1 Year no posts! Yet still a buttload of updates!!

It has been a year since I last posted here. In that span of time I graduated, went through a bad break-up, got a well paying job at an MNC, dated another chick and broke up with her as well, worked a bit, had fun, got a new gaming notebook, flashed my Xbox360, played a lot of games, changed the look and feel of my PC a dozen times, met new people, and had fall-outs with many more.

Anarcrypt was always at the back of my mind. Yes I won't deny that sometimes months passed before I thought about my most cherished creations: this site. Yet I didn't do anything. Anybody who is passionate about anything or who has a hobby will relate with me: sometimes you just don't find time! sometimes due to other obligations you are not able to do what you love even if you're darn good at it!

Yet I have mustered the courage to write on this website again! I have taken the initiative to change the layout of Anarcrypt yet again. and I also logged in to the facebook account of my handle/alias "Ezzk" after a year just to see what's happening. It was the usual: couple of people wanted to talk to me about "hacking" which is just another way of saying they wanted me to "hack" their ex's account. Some even had genuine tech queries which I was happy to help with.

But I found some reasons on the web to come back and post again!

Foremost among them was the fact that Anarcrypt's link has been shared by non other than the infamous Hacktivist group Anonymous !

That is a pretty big deal ! as these are the same guys who are world renowned for infiltrating the most secure servers and websites around the world and have been, on may occasions, mentioned in news. Even though there are like a gazzilion links along with Anarcrypt's. it still gladdens me to think that this website, through some search technique or oral reference, was deemed good enough to be mentioned by an institution such as Anonymous.

But the real reason I came back was for myself. Because I can't do with not blogging or writing or ranting. Call it what you will. and also because I am pretty good at it ! and if my hobby can benefit a few ! then hell, why not just set aside a few minutes and continue to maintain this blog.

To be fair, I don't know how long before I post again. To be fair, I don't know what I will post about. but I do know that I will keep renewing the anarcrypt's domain even if there is only one person on the web who stumbles unto to my link and finds any of my articles useful.

Expect a few articles from me in the coming weeks even if not all of them are pertaining to computer security. I am crazy about computer security, hacks and tweaks and always will be. The joy I find in hacking things in order to juice the most off it is a joy I find in very few other things! Yet I will also rant about any other tech topic I deem worthy! because heck! I love writing!

Stay tuned folks!

Here is to hoping you had an eventful year as well !

Cheers
